About Patrick Valsted

What is my story?

My name is Patrick Valsted, and I am 23 years old. I grew up and still live in the city of Louisville, Kentucky. I have always had an interest in technology—playing video games at the age of five and getting my own computer at the age of eight. My computer became a large part of my life; I looked to pack in as much information as I could, and I made so many friends. Technology continued to play a big role in my life as I enrolled in a broadcasting class my sophomore year of high school. Little did I know, this would be the start of what I want my career to be.

video camera conference

Beginning with my sophomore year of high school, I spent a large portion of my life creating videos. At first, these were to be created from prompts, and the work was more restrictive. However, as I advanced in the program, I gained more freedom with what I could do. Things really got exciting during my final year of this program. I was taking two broadcasting classes: video production and video yearbook (a class in which we created a collection of videos about the school year). This was when I really got serious. I had an idea one day to start creating a series of short films about high school students who time traveled to different events in history. Although amateurish by my standards today, these videos allowed me to test the limits of my creativity...and I found there were no limits! You can see these videos here.

IMMERSION IN DIGITAL MEDIA

College Journey

At Bellarmine, I traveled down the path of Communication and Design, Arts, and Technology. This meant immersing myself in all forms of media. Although I focused on graphic and video design, I was fortunate enough to learn about music, journalism, web/mobile design, and more. You can find examples of my work on my portfolio pages, below.

The internship that taught me branding

I had the opportunity to work with local children's theatre company StageOne, where I designed graphics and videos under the guidance of general manager Kate Gipson.

I used Canva to create a branding kit that I would use for all my graphics. Using previous examples as references, I made graphics for various forms of social media. I even started putting my own touches on the images. You can see my work here.

YouTube

Since high school, I've been making YouTube videos in my free time. Usually they're Minecraft videos, and over the years this process has allowed me to both explode in creativity and greatly polish my editing skills. In particular, I have become very adept at cutting to include only the most important details, and editing videos to music. You can find examples here.

About Patrick Valsted

I studied at Bellarmine University to become a Communications and DAT major. I hope to develop a successful career in video and media of any type. More than anything, I would like my videos to change the way people view the world, whether it be through PSAs or short films with important global themes. I would love to work with people to help bring life to their ideas and then turn them into videos. Turning concepts into moving images is who I am. I have so much creativity to share with the world.
